I have written about several different video game achievements in the past, but this one has got to take the cake. First there was the friendly competition where I and my friends tracked our gamer scores to see who was the better gamer. Localflake and I kept pace for a while, but consistently I found myself chasing him. Next there was the Old Spice Challenge where localflake and I tried to get 1500 achievement points in two months. Recently, localflake and I were both in striking distance to breaking the 10K overall gamerscore. There was some gentle ribbing at work to see who was going to get there first. Alas, the crown went to localflake. At three in the afternoon while I was working, I got a text message from him declaring victory.
What was I to do? Clearly I was in for a serious crow eating the next day when he came into the office. How could I ever recover? Well, it was bladnman who came up with the solution. He off handily said, “Wouldn’t it be funny if he came in tomorrow and you not only broke the 10K score too, but beat his score?”. Yes, that would be funny, but was it possible? Checking our ranking I was 961 points below localflake. That meant that in order to accomplish this task I would have to get every achievement in a game in a single night of play. I let this thought bounce around in my brain as I drove home. Having recently struggled to get 1500 points in two months, this idea felt like it might be a bit overzealous. Oh, but the bragging rights I would earn would be impressive.
So, at 8:00 pm that night I found myself in front of my game deck with a newly purchased copy of “TMNT”. A newly released platform game based on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle movie that was dogged by the reviewers as a game that would appeal to no one but barfed achievements quickly. Two cans of soda and 7 hours later my thumb hurt like hell but I was victorious. I have completed the game from beginning to end and found all of the achievements in the game. Exhausted, I crawled into bed for my three hours of sleep before work. Oh, but it was so worth it. My 39 point lead was meager at best, but it was still ‘the lead’.
As for the game that “would appeal to no one” … it wasn’t half bad. I sure had a fun time with it. Granted it was a short play and it was pretty easy. But it was fun. Sometimes it’s not about the cool graphics, new features or cutting edge game play. Sometimes fun is just what it is all about. I’m so glad I had a ‘reason’ to pick this game up despite what the reviewers thought. This was a fun game.
You should buy products made by Old Spice! I personally don’t, but right now I’m pretty happy with their marketing department … so you should. Old spice is the first corporation to sponsor an Xbox 360 gamer contest.
Cars

Xbox Live Arcade Games (Uno, Crystal Quest, and Geometry Wars)
Lost Planet
Oblivion
So, what did I get for all this trouble? Well, I got lots of gaming in which is what it is all about in the end. The contest officially ends on the 22nd of April and at that time I will be awarded my prises on a first come first serve basis. For sure I got an Xbox Live Arcade game called Contra. If I was one of the first 6000 people to finish, which I might be, I will get 100 Microsoft Game credits I can spend as cash online for other Xbox Live Arcade games. I also got a nifty little badge I can display on my gamer card to show the world that I finished the contest. Oh, and I also have bragging rights every day at work with Thornbery until he completes the challenge!
